This is our biggest paddling sale and event of the year! The Kirkwood location of the Alpine Shop is transformed into a paddler's paradise.  Factory reps are on hand to answer all your questions and an amazing line-up of speakers will present programs on every aspect of paddling sports.

The GCKE is where we offer the best sale prices of the year on boats, paddles, boating accessories and clothing.  It is also the kick off for our extensive series of paddling instructional programs and special events.

On Friday, March 2 at 8 PM we will have a special showing of the Reel Paddling Film Festival.   Featuring over 12 films by the worlds best cinematographers the films will include everything from flat water to whitewater adventures, paddling culture, and everything in between.  To help offset the costs associated with bringing this festival to St. Louis tickets are $7.50 each and can be purchased below.  Click here to order tickets!



On Saturday evening from 6-9 we will kick off the paddling  season with a party for all the paddlers in the St. Louis area.  We will have beverages and snacks and maybe a special deal or two for those attending.  Bring your digital photos to share on the big screen and your funniest paddling stories.  This is a free event but please RSVP below so we know how many to plan for.


Local author Bob Meyer will be on hand to autograph copies of his book "An Epic Voyage" on Saturday from noon to 2 pm.  The book details his amazing journey down the entire length of the Mississippi River in a self-made kayak.



Interested in selling your old boat at auction? Bring in your used canoe or kayak into Alpine Shop Kirkwood on Saturday, March 3 between 9 am and 1:30 pm. All you need to do is fill out some easy paperwork and you'll be ready to go.

Interested in buying a used boat? Join us at 2 pm on Saturday for the auction underneath the overhang of the front entrance to our Kirkwood store! Anyone can participate. Winning bidders must pay for and take home their new boat that same day.


Toby will be back with his interesting display of antique stoves, lanterns, and related camping gear. Many of his items are quite rare and all of them show us how far our equipment has come over the year.   His display will be on Saturday only!


Many paddling clubs and environmental organizations will have displays and staff on hand to talk with you about their missions and objectives.   If your organization would like to be included contact Marty at 314-775-2142.

St. Louis Circumnavigation – Mike Clark
Time: 10:30 AM – Location: Conference Room

St. Louis is surrounded by water. Three professional guides and educators take the epic challenge of paddling completely around the St. Louis area. This presentation will highlight Mike’s last two expeditions in 2010 and 2011 and will provide information about the upcoming 3rd trip around the ring of rivers. The Missouri, Mississippi, Meramec and Bourbeuse Rivers provide the route and Mr. Clark and staff provide the experience.

Current River Country – Marty Koch
Time: 10:30 AM – Location: Book Area

The Current and Jack’s Fork Rivers make up the Ozark National Scenic Riverways in south central Missouri. Marty will give us an overview of the rivers, their wildlife, and history in addition to the many off the water activities that make this such a special place.

Dress for Success...and Survival in Adverse Paddling Conditions – Larry Hassel
Time: 11:45 AM – Location: Conference Room

Sometimes you learn by the "school of hard knocks." The gear you buy isn't always what you bargained for in adverse conditions...the neoprene gloves you can't pull on because the gloves you had worn got soaking wet and you're miserable. The wicking top that only had the reverse effect when the night dew and fog settled in on the Missouri. Then there is the wet suit which freezes you on the surface because of evaporative cooling. The goal of this presentation is to discuss what has worked for me (and you) and discuss why and what others have shared in the past so you don't make the same mistakes that most of have made over time.

A Stand Up Guy – Shane Perrin
Time: 11:45 AM – Location: Book Area

Shane was the first person to complete the MR-340 on a stand up paddle board (SUP). His time of just over 66 hours has taken the SUP community by storm. He will be debuting his documentary film entitled “A Stand Up Guy” at this presentation. Learn about the excitement, thrill and terror encountered on this epic journey.

Day Trips Near St. Louis – Dave Hassig
Time: 1 PM – Location: Conference Room

The St. Louis area is surrounded by water and there are so many places to paddle within 50 miles that it is hard to count them all. Dave will highlight the best of the best during this informative presentation. From the big rivers to backwater sloughs to beautiful Ozark streams the St. Louis area has it all.

The Great River Rumble –Rex Klein
Time: 1 PM – Location: Book Area

The Great River Rumble is an annual event put on by the non-profit group Midwest River Expeditions. Each year the trip is on a different river and 2012 brings it to the Missouri River. This trip will run from Jefferson City to the confluence. Rex will share all of the excitement of going on this grand adventure.

Paddling The North Slope of Alaska – Toni Armstrong & Richard Spener
Time: 2:15 PM – Location: Book Area

Explore three different regions north of the Brooks Range by canoe. Follow Richard and Toni as they paddle rivers in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from the Brooks Range north to the Arctic Ocean. Then visit the central Arctic as you paddle Keoluk Creek to Teshpuk Lake, Moving further west you’ll canoe the Utukok River. Each area has a different personality, but all offer remote wilderness and incredible wildlife viewing.

Essentials of River Safety – Curtis Elwood
Time: 2:15 PM – Location: Conference Room

Curtis’ program will guide you through the important topic of river safety. Every paddler needs to be fully aware of the hidden dangers of river paddling and how to first and foremost know how to avoid problems on your trip. Equally important is to know what to do once the stuff hits the fan. Don’t miss this presentation as it could very well save your life.

His & Hers Canoe Camping – Rick & Sally Favaloro
Time: 3:30 PM - Location: Book Area

Rick and Sally are experts at ultra-lite canoe tripping. Partners in many a wilderness adventure, these two have developed a great working relationship on the trips. This program will explore some of their adventures and how they have found the way to work together under difficult conditions.

More Than Just A Club - St. Louis Canoe & Kayak Club -  Sarah Watson
Time: 3:30 PM – Location: Conference Room

The Saint Louis Canoe and Kayak Club has a diverse membership and provides varied paddling opportunities including small rivers, like the Meramec and Current Rivers; Big Rivers, such as the Mississippi and Missouri; or whitewater trips on the Saint Francis. Through participation in projects such as Stream Team's cleanup on Simpson Lake, club members promote conservation and community service. The Club emphasizes safe paddling and welcomes new members all year long.

Intro To Whitewater Paddling – Curtis Elwood
Time: 4:45 PM - Location: Conference Room

If you are ready to take your paddling up a notch and try some faster water, this is the program for you. Curtis will show you all about the sport of whitewater paddling, the necessary equipment and skills, and how to safely participate in the sport.

The MR-340 - Perry Whitaker
Time: 4:45 PM – Location: Book Area

The MR-340 is the granddaddy of all long distance paddle races.   This non-stop race from Kansas City to St. Charles attracts racers from all across the world.   Perry will show you what it takes to complete the race and how to prepare to participate.


Building The BIG Boat – Larry Hasse
Time: 12 Noon – Location: Conference Room

Over the past year Larry and his crew have constructed a wood Voyager style canoe/boat that seats 14! This program will describe the long process of designing and building this truly beautiful craft, the past and future journeys done the major waterways, and a lot more.

Rivers In Peril: The Ozark National Scenic Riverway - John Hickey
Time: 12 Noon - Location: Book Area

John will discuss the current situation on the rivers of the Ozark National Scenic Riverway.  the Current and Jack's Fork Rivers are under threat from a lack of management oversight, over use, and undue political influences.   Learn what you can do to preserve these gems of the Ozarks.

Paddling Tips For Women – Ambre Tiggs
Time: 1:15 PM – Location: Conference Room

Ladies, don't miss this fun, informative talk! Learn all about choosing the right kayak and gear to suit your needs as well as the special concerns of female paddlers. This is your chance to tap into Amber’s many years of paddling experience.

The Paddler's First Aid Kit - Dennis Maddock
Time: 1:15 PM – Location: Book Area

No matter how carefully you plan or how skilled you are stuff happens.   Dennis will detail what you should include in your paddlers first aid kit so you can meet almost any challenge on the water.

Buffalo River Country – Marty Koch
Time 2:30 PM – Location: Book Area

The Buffalo River in Arkansas is perhaps the most beautiful river in America! Marty will take you on a tour of not only the river itself but also the amazing hiking journeys to waterfalls, wilderness canyons and so much more.

The Mississippi River Water Trail - Chris Garcia
Time: 2:30 PM – Location: Conference Room

Chris will detail the amazing water trail that will cover much of the Mississippi River in the Missouri and Illinois areas.   This trail features accessible campsites and interpertative signs.   With many campsites already in place this water trail is destined to become a must do for serious paddlers.
