Limestone Trail-Mastodon State Historic Site

Limestone Trail in Mastodon State Historic Site is located near Imperial, MO. The terrain is very rugged, limestoneoutcroppings, sometimes muddy trails due to springs in the area. Trails run close to cliffs so you have to be watchful andcareful of your footing! Incredible views and glimpses of turkey vultures and eagles. One of the best parts of the hike is tryingto find the petroglyphs along the trail. The site was considered sacred by the ancient Native Americans that used to live in thearea. Kind of like an archeological “Where’s Waldo?”

There are facilities in the picnic area where we will park, pit toilets and water pumps. There is a really nice museum at thepark headquarters ($4 per adult age 12 and up) that is definitely worth a visit. Displays include a mastodon skeleton (not awooly mammoth! They will tell you how to tell the difference) and prehistoric displays.

This hike meets at Alpine Shop O'Fallon IL. at 9:00am or on-site of the hike at 10 am.

West Tyson Park

This hike has been Cancelled due to bad weather prediction.

General Information / History

Originally, a part of the Federal Government’s Tyson Valley Powder Plant, the initial 240 acres of West Tyson was conveyed to St. Louis County in 1955. In 1979, St. Louis County purchased the additional 410 Mincke Tract with a L&WCF grant. This tract is just north of the original park. The whole park includes rugged wooded uplands which typify Ozark beauty, steep bluffs, flood plain, and a portion of the Meramec River.

In 1985, the Chubb Trail, which was developed by the St. Louis County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources through the cooperative efforts of MRRA, was opened. The trail is open to hikers, equestrians and mountain bikes. Access to the Chubb Trail can be obtained through either West Tyson or Lone Elk County Parks.

This hike meets at Alpine Shop O'Fallon IL. at 9:00am

If you are coming from St Louis, please meet us at West Tyson Park.

940 acres planted by Howard McCully have a network of trails that can be hiked in an hour or 6 hours! You pick the length! We can explore the homestead, several lakes and about 15 miles of trails. This site is unique in how it was developed, a homesteader chose to return the land to nature and preserve it for future generations. Very near the rivers so eagle sightings can happen in the winter! Cliff Cave County Park

Talk about a river view! There are some lovely areas we can just sit back and watch the barges head up and down the Mississippi River. Cliff Cave County Park is tucked away in the rear of a residential area so there are times when you can see the nearby neighborhood houses and the local school. Bikes also share this travel so be aware! You do have to be fairly nimble as some of the hills are rather steep.

There is a large pavilion with restrooms and water ;close by the river. A large loop trail runs down near the river for bikes (a nice hiking trail in winter but totally lacking in shade in the summer). The trail we will be using is much more interesting and shaded! There is a cave on the property but it is closed to protect an endangered species of bat.

Come hike with us!

Logistics:
• Meet Place: Alpine Shop-O'Fallon at 9 am or on-site at Cliff Cave County Park at 9:45 am.
• Actual location: Cliff Cave County Park, MO.
• Travel time to location: 35 minutes

Stemler Cave Woods Nature Reserve

Stemler Cave Woods Nature Preserve is a local gem. Located just south of Millstadt, IL, the area features sink holes with 120acres of oak-hickory forest and 75 acres of restored prairie. Lots of animal tracks can be seen in the muddy/dirt paths. Thereare several interpretive signs throughout the preserve. Twice a year, volunteers gather to help remove invasive non-nativespecies such as honeysuckle from the preserve. No pets, bicycles or horses are allowed and there are no facilities or wateron the property.

On a personal note, this has to be one of my favorite quick, comfortable hikes. I love the scenery and the wildlife you can see. I suspect there is a very active Bobcat in the area - I have seen the spore!  The prairie is beautiful and very healthy with few invasive species. Come hike with us!

Logistics:
• Meet Place: Alpine Shop-O'Fallon
• Actual location: Stemler Cave Woods NAture Preserve
• Travel time to location: 35 minutes
• Is an Alpine Shop vehicle required? No, personal vehicles only
• Is a customer shuttle required? Unknown at this time – customers may request a carpool option

This is one of the most spectacular hikes in our area! The views are amazing! The trails are intense, this is the closest thing to mountains in the area! If you plan to go out west, this is where you should train. You will experience rugged trails, steep cliffs, bluffs, caves and it is possible you may see eagles or turkey vultures soaring above the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers (we are very near the confluence!) The Lodge is lovely and we will visit there after the hike for the restrooms and maybe a game of chess on the giant chess board! Come hike with us!
