940 acres planted by Howard McCully have a network of trails that can be hiked in an hour or 6 hours! You pick thelength! We can explore the homestead, several lakes and about 15 miles of trails. This site is unique in how it wasdeveloped, a homesteader chose to return the land to nature and preserve it for future generations. Very near therivvers so eagle sightings can happen in the winter! Silver Lake Boy Scout Trail [Saturday Hike]

Great hike for young children! ALthough we will travel close to the lake, it isn’t a dangerous hike. You will see a lot ofsongbirds and possibly water fowl. This hike shows off an amazing little city park that is almost completely surrounded byhouses, businesses and butts up to the interstate! While it is an easy hike it is a bit longer than most of our other hikes at 4.5miles. Bring plenty of water and snacks for the trail! Come hike with me!

Walker Island Trail, Horseshoe State Park

Walkers Island Trail is a very lightly trafficked trail that is about 4 miles long. It is a flat trail that leads through grasslands andwoods. I have seen many deer and abundant waterfowl in the visits I have made to this park. I the Spring one can findground nesting birds and lots of baby rabbits! The trail nicely skirts the edge of the island and the trail is only accessible inlow water so we will be watching water levels closely!Come hike with me!

Stemler Cave Woods Nature Reserve

Stemler Cave Woods Nature Preserve is a local gem. Located just south of Millstadt, IL, the area features sink holes with 120acres of oak-hickory forest and 75 acres of restored prairie. Lots of animal tracks can be seen in the muddy/dirt paths. Thereare several interpretive signs throughout the preserve. Twice a year, volunteers gather to help remove invasive non-nativespecies such as honeysuckle from the preserve. No pets, bicycles or horses are allowed and there are no facilities or wateron the property.

On a personal note, this has to be one of my favorite quick, comfortable hikes. I love the scenery and the wildlife you cansee. I suspect there is a very active Bobcat in the area - I have seen the spore!  The prairie is beautiful and very healthy withfew invasive species. Come hike with me!

Lonewolf Trail - Castlewood State Park

Castlewood State Park is one of my favorite “close to home” parks. Back in the 1900s the park was a hotbed of night activitywith dancehalls and nightclubs. Those are gone but the fun still remains! There are several trails within the park but we havechosen Lonewolf Trail for this hike. Bluffs and beautiful scenery are the perks after having to climb to the top during this 1.5mile trail. If the group feels spunky, we can always add another loop trail to our hike and either go down to the river or follow
the ridges, ons of options are at our disposal! We may be sharing the trail with bikes so keep a close eye on the trail! Pets ona 6 ft. leash are welcome! Facilities and water are available!

Goat Trail - Pere Marquette State Park

This is one of the most spectacular hikes in our area! The views are amazing! The trails are intense, this is the closest thingto mountains in the area! If you plan to go out west, this is where you should train. You will experience rugged trails, steepcliffs, bluffs, caves and it is possible we may see eagles or turkey vultures soaring above the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers
(we are very near the confluence!) The Lodge is lovely and we will visit there after the hike for the restrooms and maybe agame of chess on the giant chess board!
Come hike with me!

Limestone Trail-Mastodon State Historic Site

Limestone Trail in Mastodon State Historic Site is located near Imperial, MO. The terrain is very rugged, limestoneoutcroppings, sometimes muddy trails due to springs in the area. Trails run close to cliffs so you have to be watchful andcareful of your footing! Incredible views and glimpses of turkey vultures and eagles. One of the best parts of the hike is tryingto find the petroglyphs along the trail. The site was considered sacred by the ancient Native Americans that used to live in thearea. Kind of like an archeological “Where’s Waldo?”

There are facilities in the picnic area where we will park, pit toilets and water pumps. There is a really nice museum at thepark headquarters ($4 per adult age 12 and up) that is definitely worth a visit. Displays include a mastodon skeleton (not awooly mammoth! They will tell you how to tell the difference) and prehistoric displays.

This hike meets at Alpine Shop O'Fallon IL. at 9:00am or on-site of the hike at 10 am.

Cliff Cave County Park

  [$5.00] (13 left)

Talk about a river view! There are some lovely areas we can just sit back and watch the barges head up and down the Mississippi River. Cliff Cave County Park is tucked away in the rear of a residential area so there are times when you can see the nearby neighborhood houses and the local school. Bikes also share this travel so be aware! You do have to be fairly nimble as some of the hills are rather steep.

There is a large pavilion with restrooms and water ;close by the river. A large loop trail runs down near the river for bikes (a nice hiking trail in winter but totally lacking in shade in the summer). The trail we will be using is much more interesting and shaded! There is a cave on the property but it is closed to protect an endangered species of bat.

Come hike with me!

Logistics:
• Meet Place: Alpine Shop-O'Fallon at 9 am or on-site at Cliff Cave County Park at 9:45 am.
• Actual location: Cliff Cave County Park, MO.
• Travel time to location: 35 minutes
